During the winter quarter of my sophomore year I took "The Disenchantment of the West," taught by Jack Whelan. I chose to take it simply because it counted for honors credit and because it fit into my schedule. I had no idea how influential it would be. The class was my first exposure to philosophy and I was fascinated. I had never reflected on the ways in which I viewed and understood the world around me prior to this class. We explored a lot of philosophy in the class, from reading Plato and Nietzsche to watching The Matrix and King Lear. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to take more philosophy classes the following quarters. This led me to eventually add philosophy as a second major. I am now in the Philosophy Departmental Honors Program. I also ended up taking another class with Professor Whelan the following year and had him come give a talk for the club I am president of, The Philosophy Society!
