This class has really influenced my views on music. Music has always been a huge part of my life, and this class has taught me more about the power of music than I ever thought was possible. I learned so many things that I’ve never previously given consideration to. I can definitely say that I use the power of music in my life in many ways, and that this class has broadened my views on the subject.
I use the power of music every day. Even if I don’t listen to music one day, that only makes me appreciate music that much more the next day. I listen to music to reflect emotions I’m feeling, which can make me feel better when I’m sad (sort of like how music therapy works). I play musical instruments to express my own emotions. I listen to fast music when I work out to get my heart beat up. When I am with my friends I listen to music with them, because it gives us something to bond over and talk about, whether it is hearing music at a concert or just using music as background noise. There are more ways that I use the power of music, but those are just a few.
In terms of my views, I realized that there’s a lot more applications of music than I thought. I used to just think music was for the pleasure of whoever was listening to it. Now I know that music is in some way incorporated to almost every discipline (like math, social sciences, science, etc.). Music can be used in advertising and in stores to persuade consumers to do certain things. So much scientific research has been done on how music affects the developing brain, and the brain after it has already developed. It can be used as therapy, because it can alter emotions. It can be used to bring people together, in social gatherings like in church or other religious settings. The list goes on and on. Music is everywhere in life, no matter where one looks.
Something that I found really interesting is all the different kinds of music and sounds and which ones are considered music. It seems that there is really no definition of what music is, and that each person has their own definition of what music is to them, based on their own experiences. Some people consider sounds of nature to be music, while others like the sounds of machinery. I always think about what components must be there for sounds to be considered music. Does it need a melody, or a rhythm, or a beat, or all three? Does music even have to be sound? Can silence be considered music? Ever since taking this class, these rather philosophical questions have haunted me.
Going forwards, there is a lot I took away from this class about the power of music that I want to incorporate into my life. I learned that playing soft classical music without lyrics helps me study and do homework better. I never would have known this if I hadn’t been assigned to listen to music while I studied to see what would happen. I also learned that humming throughout the day can be rather relaxing and releases stress. I learned that listening to certain songs induces happy or sad feelings and memories. I plan on using this knowledge in my life after this class.
Overall, I think music is very powerful. I thought so before this class, and the class has only confirmed my views on this. I really enjoyed this class, and I really liked how open minded the class and the discussions were. A lot of activities pushed me out of my comfort zone, which I think was beneficial to me in the long run.
