In my junior year of college, I took on a position as the Outreach Officer for a new RSO (registered student organization) on campus, The Philosophy Society. I got the position by answering an ad in the UW Honors weekly newsletter. Given the fact that I am a philosophy major and I'm passionate about the subject, I did well at the interview. Our club's mission is to provide numerous opportunities for social contact and debate for anyone who's interested in philosophy regardless their academic field or background. Our main activities include regular talks and debates as well as philosophical movie-watching, socials, and volunteering. As Outreach Officer, my responsibility was to promote our club's events, both through online and in-person outreach. Online, I managed all of our social media sites, which included a Facebook page, an Instagram page, and a Twitter account. Every time we had an event, I would make a Facebook event page for it and share it through our club's Facebook page as well as my personal accounts. I would also contact any department advisers at UW that might have students interested in the event and asked them to share the event throughout their department. In addition, I made flyers and put them all around campus (with permission), went to classrooms to announce our events in person to students, and reached out to other clubs with similar interests to get them to collaborate with us on events. I think I did a really good job of gaining publicity for our club and the events we put on, as we frequently had thirty or more people come to our faculty lectures/Q&As (our most popular kind of event). I did so well in my position that the president, Jason, appointed me to be his co-president for my senior year. I can't wait to see what next year brings for The Philosophy Society!
