Sophomore year of college, I discovered a student-run publication at UW called Voyage. Voyage releases periodical magazines about travel. As someone who loves writing and traveling, I knew I wanted to be a part of the Voyage team as soon as I found out of them. However, they were not looking for any new team members during my sophomore year, at least until the very end of the year. That was when they announced they were looking to fill some spots of graduating seniors for the next school year. I applied to be a copy editor immediately. After an interview with the lead copy editor, Shannon, I got an email that offered me the position. I was ecstatic! Thus began my journey with Voyage. All of my junior year, our team worked hard on our magazine. We released one issue in the Spring, which was "Reclaiming Narratives" themed. I got to work closely with a writer who I was assigned to, named Emily. Each week, she would send me a draft of her piece, I would edit it and send it back to her, and she would send me the updated draft the next week. Although I was initially just a copy editor, I got the opportunity to illustrate her piece as well. Our main illustrators were busy with the rest of the magazine, and I volunteered. I am so proud of how the issue came out. Kickstarter themselves even funded our issue to help it reach the fundraising goal we had set, because they liked our project so much. The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) even recognized us as a finalist in the Best Student Magazine category in the 2019 Region 10 Mark of Excellence Awards. Being a part of Voyage has been so much fun my junior year, and I can't wait to continue as a copy editor and illustrator my senior year!
